Stewart Alexander Supports Brian Moore for Presidential Nomination of Peace and Freedom Party
Stewart A. Alexander
Socialist Party Vice-Presidential Candidate
Monday, 11 February 2008

I ask the Peace and Freedom Party California State Central Committee, including new members who will be taking out their nomination papers starting today, February 11, to support the nomination of Brian Moore for President of the United States. I also ask that the Peace and Freedom Party nominate me, Stewart Alexander, for Vice President on the Moore-Alexander slate.

On October 20, 2007, Brian Moore received the Socialist Party USA nomination for President of the United States, and I received the Socialist Party nomination for Vice President. Brian Moore (as the only candidate in their upcoming primary) will receive the nomination of the Liberty Union Party of Vermont, and I will be their nominee for Vice President. In some 20 states across the country, work is underway to place our team on the ballot. Brian Moore is a supporting member of the Peace and Freedom Party, and I have been an activist in the Peace and Freedom Party for some years now; together, we will truly represent the views of the Peace and Freedom Party as we campaign not only in California, but across the nation.

The Peace and Freedom Party and the Socialist Party USA are offering working class people, nationwide, an alternative to the Democrats and Republicans. Serving as an ambassador for both socialist parties, Brian Moore will be campaigning around the country, presenting a democratic socialist vision of a different society based on worker and community control of the means of production, and on cooperation and equality, which is in contrast to the current system based on ownership by the economic elite, and competition, poverty and oppression. Brian Moore will also be presenting a program for immediate demands consistent with the platforms of both socialist parties.

Working people are being crushed by global capitalism. Both the Democratic and Republican parties are parties of big business, funded by the same corporate owners looking to protect their power and privileges. The mainstream presidential candidates will maintain the occupation of Iraq; their policies will not prevent hundreds of thousands of Americans from losing their homes, nor will they effectively confront the growing crisis the nation is facing as a result of skyrocketing health care costs.

As a presidential candidate and long-time advocate for peace, Brian Moore has campaigned against the Iraq War and is a strong advocate for a system of socialized medicine; with no co-pays, deductibles and zero premiums, all funded by a steeply graduated income tax that would make the wealthy pay their fair share. Moore is also supporting a minimum wage of $15 an hour, and a preliminary immediate cut in the military budget of 50 percent, with the hundreds of billions of dollars in savings being redistributed for needed social services such as schools, hospitals, mass transit and low-cost housing.

Today, all the economic indicators reveal that America is in a recession, and yet the $168 billion stimulus package will only further widen the gap between the very wealthy and the poor. The true signs of inflation are also very apparent; within the past decade, most working people are earning far less and spending far more on basic necessities. Gasoline and heating oil prices have remained at historic highs and the price of groceries continues to climb. In 2008, it is being projected that more than 2 million Americans will lose their homes while the Democrats and Republicans continue to support trade agreements that will out-source good paying jobs while intensifying the damage to other countries' economies as well as our own.

America needs a change in leadership; that is why I am urging working people everywhere to support Brian Moore as the presidential nominee of the Peace and Freedom Party as well as on other ballot lines. Moore is presently campaigning nationwide. His preliminary goal is to quadruple the presidential vote totals for the Socialist Party USA, the Peace and Freedom Party, and the Liberty Union Party in 2008. This will be a victory for working people, and a good start toward a national left-progressive electoral movement.

The Peace and Freedom Party will be electing delegates, State Central Committee members, in June of 2008 for the Peace and Freedom Party Convention that is scheduled to meet in Sacramento, California on the first weekend in August 2008. Today, February 11 is the first day for Central Committee candidates to take out their nominating papers with their local registrars of voters. It is my hope that the Peace and Freedom Party State Convention will decide to nominate the ticket of Brian Moore for President and Stewart Alexander for Vice President in 2008, joining with the Socialist Party USA, the Liberty Union Party of Vermont, and activists in other states to build a vigorous, effective campaign for the rights and needs of the working class as part of this year's presidential election campaign.
